Grammar and spelling

Mistakes in grammar and spelling make it harder for people to read your writing. They also make people think that you don't know how to write properly or that you have not taken much care.

A grammar and spell checker is built into most word processing packages. Use this, but watch out:

• There are some things it won't pick up
• Sometimes it's wrong!

Everyone makes mistakes when writing. That's why it's important to check what you've written. Use a dictionary to look up words you're not sure about. Get someone else to check your work for you.

If you're not sure about how to use complicated punctuation, try to write sentences that don't need too much of it. Keep sentences short.

Remember that full stops and commas tell people where to pause. They make your writing easy to read and understand. Read through what you've written and see if the pauses are in the right place.

Especially in stories, it's important to use the right tense:

• If you're describing something that has already happened, use past tense
  (he ran to the shops)
• If you're describing something happening now, use present tense
  (he is running to the shops)
• If you're describing something that will happen later, use future tense
  (he will run to the shops).
