Do's and Don'ts

Do change your CV to suit a particular job.

Do have your CV word-processed.

Do keep it short — ideally one side only (two max), short statements.

Do state your work permit situation if you're not an EU citizen.

Do use universal fonts (like Ariel or Verdana) if you are emailing it (or send it as a pdf).

Do keep the layout simple — anything too fancy takes the eye away from the content.

Do include specific details — so if you like reading, what exactly do you read?

Do keep a copy of the final version.

Do use bullet point lists.

Don't lie - ever, at all.

Don't exaggerate — they'll burst your bubble in interview and it will be humiliating.

Don't waste space including the words "Curriculum Vitae" — it'll be obvious.

Don't give full details of every single job you've ever had — focus on recent and important stuff.

Don't give numbers for phones that you won't answer or that won't be answered by someone who knows you and will take messages (that will get to you).

Don't give your mobile phone number unless you'll be prepared to answer it in a professional way.

Don't use fancy fonts/typefaces and lots of italics — they're harder to read.

Don't use too many different sizes of typeface — use bold to highlight headings.

Don't list too many time-consuming interests — employers will think you don't have time to work!

Don't include a photo — unless the employer asks for one.
