DO

Do word process your letter, if possible (unless your asked to write by hand).

Do
read and follow any instructions given in the job ad carefully.

Do
use good quality, plain A4 paper.

Do
use formal language — but keep it straightforward and not too old-fashioned.

Do
refer to information given on your CV.

Do
cover separate points in separate paragraphs — and do keep them short.

Do
focus on the future, not the past.

Do
be positive — about yourself and the job.

Do
say if only messages can be left at the phone number you have given.

Do
say your CV is enclosed — in case the letter gets separated from it.

Do
write a specific letter for a specific job — don't try to use a standard letter for everything.

Do
check that you've spelt people's names correctly.

DON'T

Don't write more than one side of A4.

Don't
use fancy coloured paper — it won't look serious and it will be hard to photocopy.

Don't
use fancy, stylised fonts/typefaces — they can be distracting and harder to read.

Don't
exaggerate or lie.

Don't
repeat all the facts given in your CV.

Don't
grovel.

Don't
over use adjectives — stick to the facts.
